Elbilspremien: Sweden's 46,800 SEK Monthly EV Subsidy

The Elbilspremien is Sweden's Social Climate Fund-backed EV premium, paying 1,300 SEK per month directly to the buyer for 36 months (46,800 SEK total). Eligible applicants must live in a rural municipality or zone with limited public transport and have a household income below 80% of the national average (medelinkomst), adjusted for household size. The Elbilspremien is Sweden's Social Climate Fund-backed electric vehicle premium, administered by Naturvårdsverket (the Swedish Environmental Protection Agency). Eligible applicants receive 1,300 SEK per month paid directly into their bank account for 36 months, totalling 46,800 SEK. The programme is funded 75% by the EU Social Climate Fund and 25% by the Swedish state.

Who Can Apply

Applicants must be at least 18 years old with a valid Swedish Personal Identity Number and registered (folkbokförd) in one of 177 eligible rural municipalities or 433 designated sub-municipal areas (DeSO A) with fewer than 243 public transport departures per week per km². Household income must be below 80% of the national average (medelinkomst), adjusted for household size. No household member may have outstanding vehicle-related debts with Kronofogdemyndigheten.

Eligible Vehicles

Only 100% battery-electric passenger cars (Personbil klass I / M1, utsläppsklass El) qualify. Plug-in hybrids, light commercial vehicles, and heavy-duty vehicles are excluded. The vehicle price must be at most 450,000 SEK (purchase) or up to 4,600 SEK per month (lease). Both new and used vehicles are eligible, but the vehicle cannot previously have been owned by a household member or related person.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted through the Naturvårdsverket e-service portal using BankID or Freja eID. The Tax Agency (Skatteverket) verifies income automatically. Applicants must acquire the vehicle within 4 months of approval and retain ownership for 36 months. The application window opened on 18 March 2026.
