Understanding how Sweden structures its electric vehicle premium under the Social Climate Fund requires examining income qualifications alongside vehicle price constraints. This analysis walks through an illustrative calculation for an eligible household purchasing a qualifying electric passenger car.
- 2025 Income Reference Value
- 465,000 SEK
- Household Adjusted Ceiling vs National Average
- 372,000 SEK (80% of 465,000 SEK)
- Vehicle Price Range
- 64,800 SEK to 450,000 SEK
- Period 1 Maximum with Start Supplement
- 64,800 SEK
One household, in figures
This worked example provides an illustration, not financial advice, of a household whose adjusted combined income falls below the ceiling derived from the income reference value, alongside an electric car priced between the official price floor and price cap.
The income side of the example
For the income year 2025, the income reference value is 465,000 SEK. In this derivation, the ceiling on a household's adjusted combined income is 80 percent of the national average reference value, resulting in 372,000 SEK (calculated as 80 percent of 465,000 SEK). Under this rule, the calculation applies to the household's adjusted combined income, measuring taxable incomes of household members aged twenty or older divided by the consumption weight against the national average reference value. In addition, the applicant or anyone else in the applicant's household who is 20 years or older must not have been charged state income tax (statlig inkomstskatt).
The car's price in the example
The vehicle eligibility rules establish a vehicle price floor of 64,800 SEK and a vehicle price cap of 450,000 SEK. In this worked example, the purchased electric car must have a purchase price positioned between these lower and upper limits.
What the premium would add up to
In Application Period 1, the base subsidy is 1,300 SEK monthly up to a maximum of 46,800 SEK. With the one-off Period 1 start supplement of 18,000 SEK, the derived maximum total reaches 64,800 SEK (46,800 SEK + 18,000 SEK), an amount that merely coincides with the vehicle price floor. In Application Period 2, the base subsidy provides 900 SEK monthly up to 32,400 SEK, reaching a derived total of 42,400 SEK (32,400 SEK + 10,000 SEK) when combined with the 10,000 SEK start supplement. The start supplement is paid once with the first monthly payment only to a household whose adjusted combined income stays within a lower share of the national average than the general income rule allows.
