Spain's new Auto+ programme provides up to 4,500 EUR in direct grants for passenger electric vehicles, featuring manufacturing bonuses and point-of-sale dealer discounts.

Private buyers in Spain can access significant incentives under the active national Auto+ programme, which replaces the decentralized MOVES III framework. With a total budget of 400,000,000 EUR allocated for the 2026 fiscal year, this initiative offers direct grants of up to 4,500 EUR for passenger cars, which are fully stackable with personal income tax deductions. Eligible vehicles must meet specific ecological and manufacturing criteria to qualify for the maximum state funding.

How the Auto+ Subsidy is Calculated

Unlike flat-rate schemes, the Spain Auto+ programme utilizes an incremental calculation formula. Grants are determined by summing percentages from three distinct environmental and logistical criteria (E1, E2, and E3) applied to a baseline of 4,500 EUR for private citizens purchasing M1 passenger cars. Under E1, pure zero-emission models like battery-electric vehicles (BEV) and fuel cell vehicles (FCEV) secure 50% of the baseline, whereas plug-in hybrids (PHEV) and extended-range electric vehicles (EREV) receive 25%. Under E2, vehicles with an invoice price under 35,000 EUR earn 25%, while vehicles priced between 35,000 EUR and 45,000 EUR receive 15%.

The E3 criterion specifically rewards regional supply chain sustainability. Vehicles with final assembly completed in the European Union receive 15%, plus an additional 10% if the battery pack is also assembled in the EU. Consequently, a locally manufactured BEV priced under 35,000 EUR, such as the Renault 5 E-Tech, Peugeot E208, or Fiat 500e, can capture the full 100% of the baseline, yielding a 4,500 EUR grant. Conversely, models manufactured outside the EU, like the Dacia Spring, lose the E3 assembly bonus, capping their maximum subsidy at 75% of the baseline (3,375 EUR).

Eligibility and Application Rules

Private citizens of legal age with their primary fiscal residence in Spain, who do not engage in economic or commercial activities, are eligible to claim the subsidy for one vehicle. Self-employed professionals (autónomos) and corporate entities registered with the AEAT also qualify, with purchase limits of up to three and ten vehicles respectively. Additionally, operational leasing contracts with a minimum duration of three years are fully permitted under the regulations. Registered dealerships are also required to apply a mandatory point-of-sale discount of 1,000 EUR for all new M1 and N1 transactions.

Buyers must submit applications digitally through the official electronic portal of the Ministerio de Industria y Turismo. The application process requires several key documents, including the definitive technical inspection card (Tarjeta ITV), the registration certificate (Permiso de Circulación), a detailed commercial invoice, and bank-issued proof of payment. The government disburses funds via direct bank transfer directly to the beneficiary's bank account once the telematic system processes the application and the Secretaría de Estado de Industria issues a formal resolution.
